KIC 28: Treating Addictions Using Integrative Medicine with Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH

KIC 28: "Treating Addictions Using Integrative Medicine." Host Beth Greer interviews Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH

This is a whole new world we have in medicine now where we can actually identify genes much more easily…and we can now look at which medications might work best, which supplements might work best.

—Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH

If you’ve wondered whether your kid is really addicted or is actually self-medicating to ease trauma or because of a genetic predisposition, or whether alternatives, such as treating addictions using Integrative Medicine, can be effective for your child, this show is for you.

My daughter has been clean and sober for about 3 years (she’s only 20!) and she was helped greatly by testing her brain biochemistry and getting her on the right supplements.

In this episode, I interview Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH who is an internationally-known pioneer in the use of Integrative Medicine for the treatment of eating disorders, obesity and addictions.

As a parent and a professional,  I am passionate about helping us all get and stay healthy by reducing or eliminating our exposure to harmful, often hidden toxins that can negatively impact our health. This is particularly true when it comes to psychotropic drugs which are often prescribed for kids who are experiencing depression, addictions, or other mental health issues.

Psychotropic drugs can have major physical and psychological side effects and while they may be exactly the right approach to treatment in some cases, I’m always interested in finding effective, science-based alternative approaches parents can explore to help their children who have issues like addiction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, etc.

About Dr. Carolyn Coker Ross

Dr. Ross, in addition to being an Integrative Medicine physician, is a speaker and the author of three books, the most recent of which is “The Food Addiction Recovery Workbook.” She is also the CEO of The Anchor Program™, an online coaching program for obesity and binge eating disorder. Her private practices are located in Denver and San Diego.

In this podcast you will learn about:

1. The association of the dopamine D2 receptor gene (DRD2) with alcoholism and other addictions

2. How 50-60% of addictions might be attributed to genetics

3. Understanding how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) can play a role in addictions

4. Why Limbic Therapy can be extremely helpful in overcoming addictions

5. How are addictions to drugs and alcohol are related to eating disorders, self-harm behaviors or other “self-destructive” behaviors
